In Isa. 42:1, 5, the Servant of the Lord is “My chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him.” Similarly in Ezekiel 37, the Spirit comes from without; he is not merely some strengthened capacity within. This becomes clearer in the light of two distinct traditions in the OT and Judaism. According to the “prophetic” tradition, the Messiah will be the kingly but earthly Son of David who will bring in the Kingdom of God through his being anointed by the Spirit of God.
